Bentley Torcal Debuts as its First All-Electric Luxury SUV

Bentley has revealed the Torcal, its fourth model line and the first with a fully electric powertrain, introducing a new interpretation of luxury that blends handcrafted materials, advanced technology and effortless performance. Making its global debut in London, England, the Torcal is positioned as a template for future Bentleys, regardless of powertrain. Designed, engineered and built in Crewe, the new SUV represents a significant investment in British manufacturing while expanding the brand’s model portfolio into a new era of electrification. “The Torcal is a Bentley first and foremost, created by hand by people who care, using the best available materials and technology to blend heritage with cutting-edge innovation. I believe this is one of the best Bentleys ever,” said Dr. Frank-Steffen Walliser, Bentley’s chairman and CEO. Available at launch in both core and more sporting S specifications, the Torcal delivers up to 888 PS and 1,350 Nm of torque. The Torcal S can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 2.8 seconds and reach 162 mph, while the core model produces 821 PS and 1,194 Nm and reaches 60 mph in 3.3 seconds. But Bentley has approached the Torcal as something more than a high-performance electric SUV. Its brief is to deliver the sense of effortless performance, craftsmanship and comfort expected of the marque while introducing technology designed around how occupants experience the car. A New Expression of Bentley Luxury Led by design director Robin Page, Bentley’s in-house design team has created an imposing yet low-slung SUV with a long wheelbase, an ‘endless bonnet’, short overhangs and what the brand describes as an “upright elegance.” The exterior introduces a new design language while drawing on Bentley’s heritage. A distinctive illuminated diamond grille, advanced lighting technology and clean rear graphics are combined with powerful rear haunches and a tapering cabin. Bentley describes the resulting form as the “resting beast,” intended to convey contained strength and energy. The diamond pattern continues throughout the vehicle, appearing in different forms across the exterior and interior. Inside, the Bentley wings inspire the dashboard architecture, while leather, wool, veneer and aluminum are integrated into a cabin designed to emphasize authentic materials. Knurled controls and reinterpreted bullseye air vents provide physical points of interaction, with traditional craftsmanship paired with modern technology. The standard seats offer 16-way adjustment, heating, ventilation, adjustable bolsters, and a new massage function. Bentley’s Postural Adjust and Smart Seat Climate systems are available as options, while the Wellness Seat Specification extends the massage function into the cushion to include the legs as well as the back and shoulders. For the first time in a Bentley, the three-occupant rear seat can power fold. Sustainable Materials Meet Craftsmanship The Torcal also expands Bentley’s approach to sustainable luxury. In collaboration with Somerset-based Fox Brothers, Bentley has developed what it describes as the world's first 100% Merino wool automotive fabric. The material is certified by the Responsible Wool Standard and brings the softness and warmth associated with fine wool into an automotive interior. Another new finish, Ombré Walnut by Mulliner, uses up to 1,000 individually selected layers of sustainably sourced walnut off-cuts and craft recycled paper. The layers are pressed together and sliced to less than a millimeter thick, creating a finish that moves through four shades of walnut. Sunburst Aluminum by Mulliner takes inspiration from the engine-turned aluminum dashboards of historic Bentleys, while customers can choose from an extensive palette of leather, Dinamica, Merino wool, wood veneer and technical finishes. The result is an interior that combines Bentley’s traditional emphasis on natural materials with a more contemporary interpretation of sustainable luxury. 888 PS and a 375-Mile Range The Torcal’s fully electric powertrain uses two permanent-magnet synchronous motors, supported by an 800-volt, 113-kWh lithium-ion battery. With up to 888 PS and 1,350 Nm, the Torcal S delivers the highest torque of any Bentley ever made. Yet Bentley says the performance has been deliberately calibrated to remain accessible, progressive and sophisticated. The chassis is equally significant. The Torcal introduces Bentley’s first fully active suspension, using independently controlled dampers that can react to road and driver inputs while eliminating the need for conventional anti-roll bars. Electronic all-wheel steering is standard, with up to five degrees of rear-steering angle helping reduce the turning circle to 11.1 meters. The result, Bentley says, is a car capable of combining long-distance comfort with agile handling and off-road composure. Its five-meter length also contributes to a spacious cabin, with 460 liters of luggage capacity supplemented by a 90-liter front storage area. Range is rated at up to 375 miles, or 600 kilometers, on the WLTP cycle. At a 400-kW charger, the battery can charge from 10 to 80 percent in just under 20 minutes, adding approximately 100 miles of range in seven minutes. A Soundtrack Made by Musicians Perhaps the most unusual expression of Bentley’s approach to electrification is the Torcal’s sound. Rather than simply reproducing an artificial engine note, the development team looked to the rhythm of Bentley’s historic 6¾-liter V8 for inspiration. Musicians used real instruments, including drums, viola and bass guitar, to create what Bentley calls the Bentley Dynamic Symphony. The sound varies with torque demand and vehicle speed and becomes more immersive in Sport mode. It can also be switched off when silence is preferred. Even smaller details have been given a handcrafted interpretation. The sound of the turn indicators comes from a recording made in Bentley’s upholstery workshops of a hammer striking leather, while the touchscreen and digital assistant sounds are derived from the sound of a crystal glass. For those who want a more immersive audio experience, Bentley offers a 1,780-watt, 28-speaker Naim system with Dolby Atmos 7.1, kinaesthetic seat shakers and front headrest speakers. Luxury That Adapts to the Journey The Torcal introduces four Experience Modes that go beyond conventional powertrain and chassis settings. Bentley Mode, Comfort, Sport and Refresh coordinate lighting, sound, climate, airflow and digital information to alter the character of the cabin. Comfort Mode can minimize distractions and offer a digital detox by hiding all but essential information. Refresh increases fresh-air circulation and brightens the lighting, while Sport creates a more focused environment with a more immersive soundtrack. Technology is similarly integrated into the driving experience. Curved OLED displays, facial recognition and mobile-device key functionality are joined by an augmented-reality head-up display that projects navigation and driver-assistance information into the driver’s field of view. The Torcal also features 25 radar, sensor and camera systems supporting advanced driving, parking and towing functions. Its four radar-controlled powered doors can automatically open and close, with door closing initiated by fastening a seat belt, using the central touchscreen or, for the driver, applying pressure to the brake pedal. A Frosted Diamond switchable-glass sunroof adds another layer of customization, allowing occupants to alter the light and atmosphere of the cabin. The Torcal S The more performance-focused Torcal S distinguishes itself visually as well as mechanically. Its 888 PS and 1,350 Nm are accompanied by black exterior brightware and mirror caps, dark rear lamps, a rear diffuser, sports sills and front bumper strakes. Red brake calipers, S fender badges, black Bentley wing badges and a dedicated S interior color split, quilt and stitch pattern reinforce the sporting character. Piano black veneer, illuminated treadplates and dynamic “waterfall” mood lighting complete the S specification. As Bentley’s first fully electric model and the brand’s fourth model line, the Torcal represents a significant transition without abandoning the qualities that have defined the marque. Martin Page, Torcal’s product line director, summarized its philosophy: “The Torcal represents something new, and I think unique. First Impressions: Bentley Torcal EV Glows With The Flow

The Bentley Torcal, the brand’s first electric vehicle, has finally broken cover following a false start, a dramatic pivot, and an extended tease. The slow burn began in 2020 when Bentley announced a fully electric lineup by 2030. The chronologically optimistic plan met with shifting regulations and a lackluster premium EV market, ultimately leading to the visually polarizing and technologically impressive Torcal. Rather than barreling toward pure electrification, Bentley expanded its hybrid offerings while bringing in a purist-pleasing internal combustion-only Supersports. Those shifts empowered Torcal to become one the most carefully considered luxury electric vehicle launches in this weird new world order. Torcal’s fresh face showcases two distinct features: a surprisingly flat countenance reminiscent of a mini-Rolls-Royce Phantom (which is in fact a hat tip to the late, great Bentley Continental T from the late 90s and early 2000s) and a “grille” encasing seventy-six illuminated hand-cut crystals behind a clear display. The crystals are an inventive talking point, with lighting patterns that glow and pulse with an illusion of depth in an otherwise monolithic front end. Neat freaks will dread cleaning the clear polycarbonate covering following inevitable bug strikes, especially as airborne critters will likely be drawn toward the lusciously-lit surface – bring microfiber and a bottle of Quik Detailer! The side surfacing and the rear haunches allude to Bentley’s current lineup, while the tail embraces a refreshingly modernist form factor with a minimalist resolution to the rest of the sweepingly upright design. For some dimensional context, Torcal is the shortest four-door in the Bentley lineup: five inches shorter than a standard wheelbase Bentayga, and over a foot less lengthy than a Flying Spur. Its SUV configuration presents more practical packaging than, say, Rolls-Royce’s nearly 18-foot-long, two-door Spectre.  As with its cousins the Audi Q7/Q9 and Porsche Cayenne, all four of Torcal’s doors can open and close electrically on their own accord. Inside is a reassuringly plush space that feels definitely Bentley: wide headrests, supple hides, and avant-garde options like the world’s first 100 percent Merino wool trim and so-called Ombré Walnut by Mulliner, which features up to 1,000 layers of sustainably sourced veneer and recycled paper pressed together and sliced less than a millimeter thin. Sunburst aluminum offers yet another novel texture, offering what Bentley calls a “reinterpretation of engine-turned aluminum.” There’s a focus on color, trim and materials showing that Bentley hasn’t lost track of its core values while chasing quixotic electrified windmills. Despite advanced 800-volt architecture from the Porsche Cayenne, Bentley leans heavily into the themes of analog sights and sounds. Yes, there are still digital displays and the Tron-like chandelier-of-the-future grille, as well as the annoyance of HVAC vents that lack physical controls. But there are also physical door handles and some traditionalist touches that introduce a human element in hopes of softening the digital blow. While most EVs leverage synthetic propulsion soundtracks, Bentley created a soundscape that pays homage to the carmaker’s internal combustion past. An audio sample of the legendary V8 powering decades-old land yachts like the Turbo R is complemented with live recordings of a drummer depicting the 6.75-liter powerplant’s firing order. Other signature sonics include a finger running across a crystal rim for the digital assistant sound, a hammer striking leather for turn signal tick-tick, and a flute for a warning indicator. Visual easter eggs include LED projections onto door cards of actual crystal refractions and footage of a hand placing a crystal onto the instrument cluster. The latter only appears every 26 hours so it’s not an everyday occurrence. It wouldn’t be a modern EV without huge power, quick charging and smooth running. On those points the Torcal achieves extra credit thanks to its Porsche underpinnings. Two models will be available, base and S, with the S delivering 886 horsepower and 738 lb-ft from three permanent magnet motors, making this aptly named model the torquiest Bentley in history. The 113 kWh lithium-ion batteries can go from 10 to 80 percent in a mere 16 minutes. In top dog form, Torcal is capable of launching to 60 mph in a breezy 2.8 seconds. Estimated range is up to 375 miles on the WLTP standard, which should translate to roughly 310 EPA miles. I wasn’t subjected to brutal acceleration during my ride-along in a camouflaged prototype following Monterey Car Week, but I did experience quite the range of suspension damping. Bentley’s first fully active suspension system can raise or lower each damper individually, thus enabling infinitely adjustable anti-roll behavior without the use of roll-bars. On a tight on-ramp to highway 101, Torcal felt shockingly flat while it negotiated the high-speed corner. Conversely, the two-chamber air suspension delivered plush ride quality over cracks, ruts, and bumps. The tech may be borrowed from Porsche, but the tuning and effect feels definitively Bentley. Four-wheel steering of up to five degrees enables a tight turning radius, agility at lower speeds and stability at highway speeds. An electric Bentley is an inevitability which might, as occurred with Jaguar, have defined the entirety of the brand. Instead, Torcal offers one EV option amidst a lineup of hybrid and full internal combustion models. Compared to other premium EVs, Bentley’s secret weapon isn’t ultimate speed or outright range, nearly impossible milestones to achieve. Rather, Bentley has taken the unique tack of packaging future-forward styling and inventive visual features with discreet touches of nostalgic analog hat tips. The tactic may be anathema to modern battery-electric nameplates like Lucid, Rimac or Tesla, but it’s essential for a legacy brand that counts pioneering luxury and serial success in motorsports as its calling card. Torcal isn’t the first electrified SUV to come to market, but given its circuitous path and fully considered execution, it is arguably the most interesting EV of the moment. The discoveries of Nicolaus Copernicus were nothing short of revolutionary, and in the hundreds of years since they were made, they have been incredibly influential in reaching the understanding of the universe that astronomy has today. Celebrating his incredible intelligence and forward-thinking in his home country, Bentley Poland has unveiled a new bespoke collection of cars crafted by Mulliner that pay homage to his genius: the Nicolaus Copernicus Collection. Consisting of three Bentley Continental GT S and GTC S models, each vehicle features a unique, celestial-inspired color theme. Developed in collaboration with Bentley Warsaw, Mulliner craftsmanship played a crucial role in combining ultra-luxury and stunning design in the bespoke collection. Connecting all of the vehicles’ designs is the “Copernicus Diagram,” a design motif depicting Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune, which can be seen throughout all of the cars. Bentley announced its collaboration with Tutto Bene at this year’s Monterey Car Week, debuting a new exclusive event called “Stazione Remota.” After that, Bentley Motors announced that the collaboration would continue in Italy at Tutto Bene’s Lake Maggiore hillclimb event. There, Bentley rejoined Tutto Bene with another impressive presence set against the backdrop of Italy’s beautiful Lake Maggiore, with several of the brand’s icons on display and taking on the hillclimb route. The ‘FULL SEND’ Bentley Supersports, the car drifted around Bentley’s Crewe, England, headquarters by Travis Pastrana, was present at the Tutto Bene event, alongside the 2018 Bentley Pikes Peak Bentayga, both tackling the route that is not timed, so as to evoke a sense of fun, style, and driving joy rather than a competition of speed. However, the dynamic cars were also joined by a display at the event’s Bar Stazione. These included a new glow-in-the-dark Flying Spur, created by Welsh artist Deathspray, the off-road-focused Bentley Bentayga X Concept, and the Bentley Speed 8, whose claim to fame is victory at the 2003 24 Hours of Le Mans. One of the oldest cars in attendance was “Smoky” a 1926 Super Sports that represents the earliest days of a nameplate used today for Bentley’s most driver-focused and engaging Continental GT yet. If there’s one thing to understand about pioneering automotive brands like Bentley Motors, it’s that heritage runs deep, and that connection to its history has long since been celebrated and preserved by a worldwide community of owners and enthusiasts. And while Bentley is now a household name in its own right, some may be surprised to learn that its history is closely intertwined with Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. Instead of existing solely as industry rivals, the two brands were connected for decades after Rolls-Royce acquired Bentley in 1931, remaining under the same ownership until their separation in 2003. Along with a group of passionate purists with a love for both marques and British craftsmanship in general, the International Club for Rolls-Royce and Bentley enthusiasts is commemorating 80 years of Bentley production at Crewe with a special celebration.  GALLERY-EMBED On August 29th, members of the RRIC from around the globe will gather at the British Motor Museum, bringing Bentleys that span from the first Crewe-built Mark VI from 1946 to today's latest Continental GT. After the Pyms Lane facility transitioned from wartime Merlin engine production to automotive manufacturing, the Mark VI became the first Bentley to leave the Crewe production line in 1946. Its 4.25-liter six-cylinder engine, understated design, and reputation for reliability helped establish the foundation for generations of Crewe-built Bentleys that followed. By the end of production in 1951, more than 4,000 examples had been built, including just 241 H.J. Mulliner four-door, six-light saloons like the two-tone 1950 example now in Bentley's Heritage Collection. Partnering with Fox Brothers, a wool cloth maker that dates back to the 18th century, the Torcal uses a 100-percent Merino wool automotive fabric that combines the softness and luxury of the material with the ability to meet the demands of a luxury vehicle. The flannel is also certified by the Responsible Wool Standard, aligning with Bentley’s commitment to sustainability. <- Gallery -> In addition, the Torcal will also introduce Ombre veneers. Combining sustainably sourced walnut offcuts and recycled paper, the veneer is made by pressing together 1,000 layers to create a seamless transition in tone that complements the shapes of the interior, going from black, to dark shades, and finishing with a natural walnut color. Sunburst Aluminum by Mulliner is another material that is being introduced with the Torcal. It pays homage to the engine-turned aluminum that Bentleys were known for in the past. At this past Monterey Car Week, Bentley Motors boasted a bigger presence than ever, minting a new partnership with Tutto Bene, and collaborating with LA-based automotive culture hub Race Service, as well as the Italian BorromeodeSilva design house. The partnership resulted in the new ‘Stazione Remota’ gathering, held at Holman Ranch in Carmel Valley, which not only saw old and new cars from across the industry, but also the presence of the Joe & The Juice Joe’s Bentayga, live DJ music, 200 VIP guests, the new Bentley Supersports, the Bentayga X concept car, and one of the original 1920s Bentley Supersports cars. While Stazione Remota was a spectacular event, it was just the beginning for Bentley’s partnership with Tutto Bene. Coming away from Monterey Car Week, Bentley and Tutto Bene are set to continue their partnership in Milan, Italy, at Tutto Bene’s annual hillclimb outside the city. Coming to the event as a lead partner for its 2026 iteration, Bentley will bring a toy box of cars to Tutto Bene. The latest Bentley Supersports will participate in the hillclimb, specifically showcased in its ‘FULL SEND’ livery, appearing with the Pikes Peak Bentayga, a Bentley already known for its hillclimb prowess, having previously set the production SUV record on the precarious and legendary course. Bentley Appoints New Head Of Exterior Design

With the all-electric Torcal on the cusp of being revealed, Bentley is at a turning point in its century-long history. As it prepares to enter a new era, and while it boasts an impressive presence at this year’s Monterey Car Week, Bentley Motors has announced the appointment of a new Head of Exterior Design and Design Operations, T.Jon Mayer. Succeeding Domen Rucigaj, who has moved on to a new position within Volkswagen Group, T.Jon Mayer continues to oversee Design Operations, but expands his responsibilities from a previous position as Head of UX Design to now become Head of Exterior Design at Bentley Motors. With Bentley at the beginning of a new chapter and rapidly executing its Beyond100+ plans, T.Jon’s leadership of the Exterior Design Team at Bentley Motors will help guide the next generation of its ultra-luxury vehicles, especially as the Torcal introduces Bentley’s approach to BEVs. Commenting on his new role at Bentley Motors, T.Jon Mayer said, “Bentley represents one of the most compelling luxury brands in the world, with an extraordinary heritage and an exciting future ahead. I’m honoured to lead the Exterior Design team at such a pivotal moment for the company and look forward to helping shape the next chapter of Bentley design.” Mayer’s experience in international automotive design stretches back more than 20 years, and he originally joined Bentley in 2024. Before then, he spent 13 years at Volvo Cars, holding senior positions like Head of Exterior Design and Head of Design at Volvo Cars USA. His contributions shaped the designs of models like the Volvo EX60, EX30, S60, V60, and V60 Cross Country, and introduced signatures of Volvo’s design like the Thor’s Hammer headlight. Mayer’s studies include graduating from Carnegie Mellon University, as well as studying at the ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, California. In the new role, Mayer reports to Bentley Motors’ Director of Design, Robin Page, leading a team of 45 in Bentley’s Exterior Design department, developing the current and future product lineup of the ultra-luxury manufacturer. About the new appointment, Robin Page commented, "Since joining Bentley, T. Jon has become an integral member of our Design leadership team. He has played a key role in strengthening the connection between creative design and delivery, while his leadership has been instrumental in ensuring the UX vision for Torcal was successfully realised from concept through to production.
